We use a commercial thing called spreadscript which gets confused by some newer
Excel features, but seems to work OK for most things, reading and writing.  We
have the Solaris version but it is also available on Linux.

For creating Excel files, we also use the Perl Spreadsheet::WriteExcel module.
I _really_ wish there was an equivalent for python....
