Hmm, OK, seems this is odder and harder than it looks on the surface.  

I'm not that fired up about the requirement for al-lookup tags to be
run_template()'d and not just load_template()'d , but you'd need to be 
explicit about this (and the difference between load_template() and 
run_template(), which is still pretty hazy to me) in the manual.
